Khanyi, Nonhle and Babalwa get a Reality Check

A brand new reality series featuring three popular socialites will premier this July.

Babalwa Mneno, Nonhle Thema and Khanyi Mbau are known for their bling lifestyles and controversy. But South Africa will soon see a different side to the three socialites in e.tv’s new show, Reality Check, starting 6 July at 6:05PM.

The constructed reality series documents the quest of three socialites who feel it’s time to give back and pay-it-forward. Proving that behind the glamour, fame and tantrums, Babalwa, Nonhle and Khanyi are affected by social issues and are dedicated to making a difference and committed to doing their bit towards building a better South Africa.

“These women have enough mileage in the industry; they understand how to play the good girl and be the controversial girl,” Says Khanyi Mbau.

In each episode the women will receive a mystery SOS SMS that will outline their goodwill mission for the day. They will then meet at the scene and swap their manicure appointments and personal training sessions for some good, old-fashioned hard work.

If you think the women had it easy while filming, guess again. 13 Episodes were filmed in 13 days with grueling call times and long hours. “The show has been my life,” says Khanyi, “we had 3am call times and didn’t finish shooting until 8pm. My poor boyfriend is suffering.”

Here's a video clip of Khanyi talking about the new show and what she hopes viewers will get out of it.

The Return of Stan

Stan’s come back to help his brother bring down Daniel. We chat to actor Luthuli Dlamini about his role on Scandal!

Best known for his lead role as Stan Nyathi on Scandal, Zimbabwean-born actor Luthuli Dlamini joined the show in 2005 when it first aired. Luthuli starred on numerous shows across the country, but Stan was his first lead character. He says he’s drawn to the character of Stan because it’s a character that he had to start from scratch and build up to what it is now.

“His genesis in many ways is almost a part of me – the world that Stan lives in is the one I’ve become comfortable with,” explained Luthuli. “He will be with me for the rest of my life and I hope he never dies.”

Luthuli took a break from the show in 2007 and rejoined the set again in 2011 as Stan came back to take on Daniel and expose his lies. After a brief attempt in which Stan almost lost his life, he left for South America to look for his brother, the real Daniel Nyathi.

This week Stan returned to South Africa after learning that his brother escaped from prison and is holding Lucas hostage.

We chat to Luthuli about what Stan’s return means for Daniel and Mangi.

Tell us about your character, Stan, what major storylines has he been involved in?
Stan left to South America to find his brother, the real Daniel, because that was the only way he could expose Lucas for a fraud and save his brother who was wallowing in jail in South America. So when he got to South America, he goes from prison to prison hunting for his brother.

He then discovers that his brother escaped from prison, he disappeared and went back to South Africa. And that’s what prompts his return to South Africa. Of course, when he arrives he discovers that a gentleman who has been parading as Cain Gumede is in fact his bother Daniel. Then he discovers that Cain is so racked with hatred and revenge that he’s already put his plan for revenge into action.

Why is it important to him that Daniel is exposed?
Number one, because Daniel is a bastard and he deserves it. Number two, the truth must come out and Lucas must be punished for all his bad deeds. Daniel also shot Stan, but Stan isn’t really after revenge, he just wants justice.

Will he help his brother bring down Daniel?
He’ll certainly try. Stan is about trying to help his brother and he’s more concerned about seeing that justice is served. And of course, repairing his relationship with Mangi is also important.

Does he regret abandoning Mangi?
Hugely, Stan is racked with guilt and he feels that he’s let Mangi down. And really the person he cares most about is Mangi. Everyone else has let him down – his ex-wife Thato, Daniel, Gogo and Shakira. Eddie and Mangi are the only people who’ve always been there for him.

Will he try to mend his relationship with Mangi?
Yes, he makes a plan to. What Stan really needed was to sit Mangi down and explain what happened and to assure him it wasn’t about him. But he also finds a way of making amends to Mangi at the expense of Lucas.

Does he think his brother is capable of harming anyone?
Yes, when he understands just how damaged he is. 10 Years in prison can damage anybody and he comes to realise this through Cain’s actions.

What can viewers expect from Stan in the next few weeks?
Stan will be himself. There’ll be a lot of angst. There’s a lot at stake but what’s important to him is Mangi’s wellbeing and subsequently Quinton’s because he discovers he is a Nyathi.

Will justice be served and Daniel punished? Catch Scandal! Monday to Thursday 7:30PM.

Tshidi: Caught Between Two Men

$

It's been an emotional rollercoaster with both Maidi and William fighting to win her heart, the decision has been a tough one.

Trouble seems to follow Rhythm City’s Tshidi.  Just when she manages to settle in her studies, she’s hit with a love triangle and forced to choose between her husband, William, and Maidi.

Born in Soweto and raised in Soshanguve, Pretoria, Nokuthula Ledwaba the woman behind Tshidi, tells us what’s going on inside Tshidi’s mind.

Explain what’s been happening with Tshidi.
Phew! What a rollercoaster this has been. I think part of the reason Tshidi is going through this turmoil is because she often tries to be the saviour and is a people pleaser. Tshidi’s love for William mostly comes from a place of pity, she feels sorry for him, and she’s choosing him because it’s the right thing to do, he is her husband after all. I think if there weren’t these complexities involved with William, Tshidi would be with Maidi.

What’s been the most difficult part in choosing between the two men?
These men are different and unique in their own way, William has the typical husband qualities and Maidi is very worldly. Tshidi’s mind has been racing to get a solution that works for all. William is now part of the Khuse family and is very caring. The confusion stems from the fact that both William and Maidi have a bit of what Tshidi wants, and the difficulty was choosing which character overrides the other.

What does Tshidi ultimately want?
She wants to feel loved, be happy and ultimately have a family of her own. She also wants to be secure in her relationship with a partner who supports her dreams, and she doesn’t want to have to look over her shoulder.

What do you hope for Tshidi in the future?
I really hope that she’ll start dealing with her own issues. She’s always been dependent on others for happiness. I think she’ll try and find her own path and be able to embrace her past while spearheading her future.

A look back at Tshidi’s troubled past:
- She once tried getting into music.
- She’s a recovered drug addict.
- She was sexually harassed when she worked as a receptionist at Zondi Enterprises.
- She almost eloped with her drug dealer, King.
- She dated Maidi while he was married and had to deal with Nozipho’s wrath.

Naïve Mampho Gives it up to Jabu

We chat to the young Mampho a day after losing her virginity to Jabu, her “sugar daddy.”

Last night Mampho surrendered to Jabu despite warnings from her friends.  The 16-year-old’s 40-year-old lover finally managed to break Mampho’s virginity, barely two months into the relationship.

What is Mampho thinking? We ask actress Itumeleng Bokaba.

You are dating an older man, is Jabu the guy you had always imagined as your first love?
Not really, the relationship between me and Jabu happened in a time when I was desperately looking to be loved and not necessarily be in love. As a full figured teen I have self-esteem issues plus I don’t get the attention I deserve and my parents (Jafta and Rose) were recently on the verge of a divorce. Here comes this man who looks past all these imperfections and wants to love me! All I can say is Jabu was the booster that my personality needed.

Last night you had sex for the first time, are you worried about the risks?
Consciously I’m not thinking of the implications, but at the back of my mind I know that engaging in unprotected sex is risky. I want to please Jabu and I’m relying on him to have my best interest at heart.

What made you agree to Jabu’s proposal?
I wanted to have control of my life and prove to myself that I’m beautiful and that there is someone who actually loves me for me.  Most of my friends are always ahead of me, but dating Jabu, I’m now the first to have a boyfriend amongst my friends.

Why not date a boy your own age?
Most of my peers aren’t interested in asking me out and barely give me attention.

How has dating an older man changed your perspective on life?
In my mind he is my all and my goal is to ensure I keep him happy, hence I bunk school at times to be with him.

What if the relationship ends?
If Jabu were to end the relationship, it would crush me. Jabu is my feel-good drug.  But if I’m the one who walks away from him, all will be OK.

What do you think of Mampho and Jabu’s relationship?  What advice would you offer her if she was your friend?

Battle of the Sexes

It’s women versus men in the battle of Rhythm City’s Redemption.

Naomi and Lucilla, David and Miles - which team will be victorious?

The battle to retain Redemption open is heating up. Enemies have paired against each other to try and get their hands on Redemption, a recording company that has produced the late Rachel Phakathi, Joy Cele and the now CEO of Redemption Lucilla. This business will go under the hammer on the 24th of this month.

Who is the better team? We list their strengths, weaknesses and achievements.

Miles  & DavidNaomi & Lucilla

Miles is a focused businessman whose business etiquette is applaudable.
He brings in 35 years of experience in the recording industry plus he is the man responsible for building Redemption.
Lucilla brings with her both the practical and theoretical knowledge of the recording industry. Before working her way up to the CEO office, she was previously a singer signed to Redemption.

David’s business acumen is impressive. He previously stole Redemption from Miles
and managed to run it successfully.

Naomi’s business knowledge has often been interrupted with her scheming and her time off. If she spent less time scheming and more on the business, she could give her competitors a fair run.

Miles is a hardworking man who commits
to doing things by the book and his business ethics are clean.
Lucilla can be overzealous, but while she brings the passion, she doesn’t have much experience.

David sometimes uses underhand tactics, caring only about the bottom line.

Naomi’s business sense isn’t always clean, either. She will do whatever is necessary to protect her interests.

Mile’s weakness is his inability to react quickly to pressing matters.

Just like Miles, Lucilla is reactive and lacks the ability to foresee danger before it hits.

David’s eye is always on the ball and he is more pro-active than reactive.

Naomi is equally talented in sussing issues before they become problematic.

Miles has not always been able
to maintain professionalism. He dated Shado, an artist signed to Redemption. This decision to
cross the professional line was not a wise move!

Lucilla had an affair with her junior staffer, S’fiso. Can she separate business from pleasure?  As a CEO she should lead by example and not let her emotions blind her business sense!

David is assertive and won’t mind
getting his hands dirty.

Naomi knows that in business there aren’t permanent friends. She’s feisty and will move mountains to protect her interest. She isn’t easily scared.

Miles lacks assertiveness,
he is more of a wimp.

Lucilla hasn’t found her feet to make her own decisions yet. She sometimes seeks approval from Miles or friends. How will she handle making big business decisions?

Despite his troubles, David is like a cat with nine lives. Just when it seems like it’s the end, he signals some new beginnings.

Naomi’s isn’t one to let troubles keep her down. She is larger than life and no one stands in the way of her dreams.

Miles produced the talented late singer Rachel Phakathi. He also managed to establish Redemption as a record of choice for upcoming artists.

Lucilla’s time at Redemption hasn’t been that successful, reducing the number of unearthed artists to one - Shado.

Unlike Miles, David has had a couple of run ins with the law.

Naomi’s scheming has landed her in trouble. Both her and Lucilla were previously admitted to a psychiatric ward.

Who would you rather see run Redemption, #MilesDavid or #NaomiLucilla? Follow Rhythm City on twitter and Facebook and don’t miss the drama weekdays at 6.30PM and the omnibus on Saturday at 9.30AM.

We reflect on the good and bad fathers of Rhythm City and Scandal!

With Father’s Day coming up, we decided to review the good and bad behaviour of our soapie dads. Follow all the bad daddy drama on Rhythm City, weekdays at 6.30PM and on Scandal! Monday to Thursday at 7.30PM.

Gallery Image:
Miles betrayal has left Sb’u with deep psychological scars, often sending him looking for fatherly love in the wrong places. Definitely a bad daddy.
Who knew Rhythm City’s biggest baddie would battle with fatherhood? Maybe he’s a big softy after all. We think David is going to surprise us and be a good daddy.
Even though Kop doesn’t have much material possessions, he’s good to his family. A definite good daddy!
Daniel hasn’t always been the most upstanding father. Mangi grew up thinking Stan was his father, only to find out later that in fact Daniel is his real father. Bad, bad daddy, Daniel!
Cain returned to SA to take revenge on Daniel. He later discovered that he also has a son, Quinton! Will he try and make things right between them? Time will tell if he’s a bad daddy or a good one.
Despite what’s happening with his family, we still think Mlungisi is a good daddy.

Dolph Ziggler Answers SA Fan Questions

The WWE World Tour comes to town in July, including Superstar Dolph Ziggler. Here he answers some South African fan questions all the way from LA.

Caroline @_RKO_Girl_:  Wondering what you’re reading now?
DZ: Ooh…Right now, let me check my bag. I am reading Artie Lange’s biography and A Confederacy of Dunces which is a really cool, quirky comedy set New Orleans in the 60s. I just finished Dan’s Brown book, Inferno¸which was excellent.

Shaun Myburg, Facebook: Was the concussion real?
DZ: Literally for the first time in my entire career I was totally out of action for over a month. When I got kicked in the head, I finished the match, and my doctor told me that when you get a concussion like that you sometimes go into autopilot and your body knows what you have to do and your brain gets you through it. And then for the next two days I didn’t remember anything that happened. I was diagnosed with retrograde amnesia. I never believed anything like that was real until it happened to me.

Did it affect your performance coming back?
DZ: Yeah, I was a little apprehensive when I got back in the ring. For the past eight years of my life I’ve been wrestling and falling down and doing crazy stuff on a regular basis. So actually, yeah, it scared me a little bit when I got back in the ring. I got in there with Big E, and I just had to roll around with him and just get used to wrestling again. I was nervous, but I got back into it again. And slowly but surely I’ll be back to my old self again.

Vinny Davince Mchunu, Facebook: How many meals do you have a day?
DZ: I’m always hungry, so it depends. I eat out like every day. I snack on almonds throughout the day. As soon as I’m finished eating I’m looking for more food.

That’s lucky.
DZ: To be fare I work out a lot so I’ve earned it. I can enjoy it and then use it for fuel to go workout. I am lucky to have the time to work out all the time.

Alfred Daniels Chimenya & Mpilo Mfaba Facebook: Who do you think is the best wrestler at the moment?
DZ: I’m gonna say three names: Daniel Bryan, CM Punk and myself are the best right now. In no particular order.

Roxytee Roxy N, Facebook: Besides wrestling what else do you do?
DZ: It depends. I like to read, I like to work out, and I like to write. I usually have a day and a half at home a week and I will spend it in the gym, writing comedy material, or reading.

Sibusiso Daniel Shaun Nqunqeka, Facebook: How do you keep your Beauty?
DZ: My Beauty? I don’t know, what do you do? You know for someone who gets kicked in the face all the time, I still look pretty hot. I dunno, I think I must have pretty tough skin.

@FabriceMcRomeo: What are the requirements to be a WWE Superstar for someone like me living in SA?
DZ: I think that might be a better question for Justin Gabriel, he found a way to make it work. I think the requirements are: work hard, get some training, and get a couple of years of experience. And then when you know the WWE are coming to town, find a way through channels like the website, or wrestling trainers. But you need to get some experience first, build up a reputation, and then give it a try.

Writer-director James Cameron called it the “most challenging film” he ever made. Avatar is also one of the most expensive and top grossing movies ever made.

The Na’vi language in Avatar is a real language developed entirely from scratch by a linguist.
Though he is not credited in the film, several of the locations have been identified as looking remarkably similar to paintings by English surrealist Roger Dean.
Seeing the character of Gollum in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers convinced Cameron that CGI effects had progressed enough to make this film.
Avatar cost more than $237 million to make and brought in over $2.7 billion at the box-office.
Matt Damon and Jake Gyllenhaal were the studio's first choice to play Jake Sully, but James Cameron decided to cast unknown Sam Worthington in the lead role.
Avatar is made up of about 60% computer generated elements and only 40% live action and traditional miniatures.
To celebrate the release of Avatar on DVD and Blu-ray, an electronic version of the Tree of Souls ,using fiber optic cables, could be found in Hyde Park London from 24th to 26th April 2010. It had sensors to detect the movement of people walking around it and was able to change its color, move to music, and display messages uploaded from iPods or mobile phones. For every person who interacted with the tree, a real tree will be planted as part of the global campaign to plant one million trees.
As a sort of Na’vi/Pandora boot camp, the cast and crew spent some time trekking through the forests and jungles of Hawaii.
The actors playing the Na'vi had cameras attached to their head to film close-ups of their faces.
All animals on Pandora have six limbs, except for the humans and Na'vi.
