This Sunday at 8PM, e.tv brings the Green Lantern, DC Comics' ring-wearing, galaxy-hopping space hero.
1. Green Lantern tells the story of Hal Jordan, a test pilot who is selected to become the first human member of the Green Lantern Corps. Hal is given a ring that grants him superpowers and must confront Parallax, who threatens to upset the balance of power in the universe.
2. Hal Jordan was inspired by the exploits of real-life test pilots and astronauts like John Glenn who captured America's imagination in the 1950s. His powers though, were inspired by Aladdin.
3. When working on the original incarnation of The Green Lantern, the makers looked to the Arabian Nights where Aladdin got anything he wanted from the genie - much like the construct of the Green Lantern Corps!
4. Ryan Reynolds is playing Hal Jordan, but the superhero’s looks were originally modeled after the actor Paul Newman.
5. Reynolds has been afraid of flying since he went skydiving and his parachute failed to open at the first attempt. So playing the Green Lantern was definitely a challenge, but he was able to face his fear. He told a reporter, ‘by the forth or fifth day of doing it you kinda start to get used to it’.
6. It was also on the set of the Green Lantern that Ryan met his future wife, Blake Lively.
Set your reminders and be sure not to miss Green Lantern this Sunday at 8PM.
