How did Rhythm City’s Sfiso go from being a Supersport United striker to an actor on TV?
In 2008 Dumisani Masilela was living his dream of playing for the PSL soccer team Supersport United when a car accident ended his soccer career, and in instant his life changed.
24-year-old Dumisani tells us how he went from being a striker on the field to being a finalist on Idols to playing a street kid on Rhythm City.
How did you adjust to the news that you could no longer play soccer?
That was a difficult time for me because soccer was a part of me and who I was. I was deeply hurt and during that time I found solace in playing piano to keep me sane.
My piano became my therapy and comfort when I lost my soccer career. This led me to audition for Idols and I somehow managed to dig myself out of the pain and face life. I was privileged that I made it to the top 18.
How did the acting come about?
Idols helped to pave this new path. After leaving Idols I received a call from the Rhythm City production house to audition for the role of Sfiso and I landed it. My character’s story took me on a journey of self-discovery that helped me to unveil my pain and deal with it.
Tell us more about your character, Sfiso.
Sfiso is a street kid who was abandoned by his dad when he was only four. He is smart but dropped out of school due to a lack of funds. Currently, he is looking for opportunities that will better his life. Playing this character reinforced my persistency and ignited my passion to dream and not allow anything to get me down.
