When someone makes sexual advances towards you that make you feel uncomfortable, then you are being sexually harassed.Rhythm City, weekdays at 7PM.
Mapula has been going through a tough time at school ever since her English teacher, Jeff, started making advances at her. He recently tried to kiss her and she pushed him away. Now, he’s punishing her in class by singling her out and giving her detention.
Sexual harassment is a crime and you should never stand for it. Here’s how to get help:
1. Tell someone the minute you feel uncomfortable.
It doesn’t matter how small or “innocent” the gesture may seem. If someone makes you feel uncomfortable in the way he or she talks to you or touches you, then you must tell someone right away. This could be your parents, your favourite aunt or uncle or even another teacher you trust. It might be easier to tell your friends or siblings, but an adult will have more power to support and protect you.
2. Don’t blame yourself.
Being sexually harassed isn’t anything that you need to feel ashamed of. The only person who should be ashamed is the one who did the harassing. Don’t let anyone tell you that you did something to warrant being sexually harassed.
3. Report it.
If you don’t have an adult that can help you, you still have every right to go to the authorities yourself. You could go to your principle, another teacher or even the police. Be brave and tell the truth, no matter how uncomfortable it may be. Remember that you are at school to get an education and no pervert should stand in the way of that.
