It’s been said that emotional or psychological abuse involves a great deal of intimidation, threatening, verbal abuse, shaming and many other tactics.
Let’s be honest, we’ve seen Mlungisi applying such tactics on his daughter, Lindiwe. And as a result, this lead to her running away from home.
So, here are some of the signs we’ve picked up that Lindi is emotionally abused by her father.
1. Mlungisi constantly shames Lindi
Lindi is not a book smart kid and for as long as we can go back, Mlungisi has always been shaming her for it. He even compares her to Sicelo and Omphile. In fact, nothing she does is ever good enough for him.
2. Lindi is very fearful of her father
When her parents found out she cheated in an exam, Lindi decided to run away from home. And now, she has no intention of going back as she fears her father.
3. Mlungisi controls his daughter
All his kids have to live up to the Ngema name. Because of this, he controls how they behave, where they hang, who they should hang around with and which career paths they should follow.
Lindi wants to be a singer, but her father discourages her from following a music career.
4. Lindi is emotionally immature compared to her peers
Compared to her friend, Mary and her little sister, Omphile, Lindi is emotionally immature. Most times, Lindi behaves like a child and makes decisions like a little girl. And, that could be seen as a behaviour of a child who has been emotionally abused.
5. Mlungisi shows little affection towards Lindi
We know Mlungisi is a traditional Zulu man. But, we live in a modern world where it’s okay for a father to hug or tell his kids he loves them. Lindi’s father hardly ever shows affection towards his children.
Most parents think they are grooming their children by being hard on them, when in actuality they’re psychologically abusing them.
