He plays the unpredictable Sabelo and we just can’t get enough of him! Rhythm City, weekdays at 7PM.

The 24-year-old actor started off as an extra on Rhythm City, but now he’s one of the most loved characters on the show.

We had a chat with him and this is what he shared:

He grew up in Johannesburg.

I spent most of my childhood living in the Johannesburg CBD. It was a rough childhood and I witnessed a lot of crime. At the time, my mother was a domestic worker and my father was a delivery guy, but they made sure I knew the value of education. That’s how I avoided being sucked in by the crime around me.

He has always had big dreams.

As a child, I always wanted to be a soccer player and used to play for the Old Parktonian Sports Club. I dreamed of making it big as a soccer player, but the only school that would accept me was the National School of the Arts. This was a blessing in disguise because it led me to discover my passion for acting.

Getting a role on Rhythm City.

While studying at AFDA a lecturer told us that Rhythm City was looking for a character named Emmanuel. I auditioned, but I didn’t get the role. When I heard about Sabelo’s character, I auditioned again. Although I was just supposed to do a few scenes as the guy who bullies Emmanuel, I kept getting more scenes.

He enjoys playinng Sabelo.

My character really excites me because we are so different. When people meet me, they are actually surprised that I know how to speak English. (Laughs) But I guess it means I’m nailing the character. Unlike Sabelo I don’t do drugs, I’m not violent and I value education. But growing up I had friends who are like Sabelo, so I draw a lot of inspiration from them.

Being a dad.

My daughter is my pride and joy. Her name is Amukelani and she’s 1-year-old. I always look forward to spending time with her.
