How to avoid being broke in the New Year

There is nothing worse than having no money in January! So we asked some of our favourite Rhythm Citycelebs for money saving tips.

We’ve all been there. You spend so much money turning up in December that when January comes, you can’t even afford toothpaste.

Here are some tips that could help you this festive season.

Sayitsheni Mdakhi – Speshil

You need to have a plan. Mine is simple, I always swop December and January around. I treat December as if it’s January and January as if it’s December. I don’t spend on anything unnecessary in December. I spoil myself and my family in January because things are much cheaper then.

Hloni Padi – Palesa

It’s so important to use your money wisely during the festive season. Make sure you pay all the important things like your rent and car instalments before you start spending on luxuries.

Nolo Phiri – Niki

Be realistic about the amount of money you actually have. The 13th cheque can be very deceiving because it makes you feel like you have so much more money than usual and that is not always the case. Treat December like it’s any other month because you will still have the same bills to pay in January.

Ishmauel Songo – Sabelo

If you can, try to make some extra money during December. I believe a basic salary caters for basic needs, so try to avoid using your basic salary for unnecessary things. Get a gig aside from your job to make that extra money that you can use for partying and spoiling yourself.

Mpho Molepo – Fats

Budget, budget budget!  I cannot stress how important it is to budget for the festive season at the beginning of the year already. If you don’t have enough money to go out and party, stay at home and relax. Don’t fall for the hype and peer pressure during this time, that’s how many people end up overspending.
