A pastor loses his way when he discovers his unmarried daughter is pregnant. We chat to the producer for the Not in My House drama, Duzi Twala about the plot.
Tonight’s episode of eKasi: Not in My House follows the story of a pastor’s daughter who is a shining example to the community. When she falls pregnant, her parents try desperately to hide the pregnancy.
Producer Duzi Twala unpacks tonight’s episode.
How did the story come about?
The story came from the “Tent Churches” which have mushroomed all over our townships. We discovered that most of these pastors are not really genuine men of the cloth. They try to project an image of purity when right in their backyards horrible things are happening. The newspapers bare proof of such stories.
How was the writing process?
It was exciting because we were examining and analyzing things that actually happen in our communities and that we have to deal with on a daily basis. The idea was to show that it is better to tell the truth right from the beginning rather than nurse a lie which continually grows.
Teenage pregnancy is huge problem in SA, was this theme chosen deliberately?
This theme represents a lot of controversy in our communities because the new policies of the government say that pregnant teenagers can go back to school and sit in class with other students.
This has raised a lot of problems. Some parents feel that this makes other girls curious and might even push them towards having early sex rather than concentrating on their studies.
What would you like viewers to learn from this story?
The bible says “The truth shall set you free” and there is nothing better than the truth. If the pastor and his wife in the story had just told the truth from the beginning and left it to the congregation to forgive their child, none of the tragedy that follows would have happened.
Although we appreciate the new churches on our landscape, let pastors be truthful about who they are, what they do and what they stand for.
What can viewers expect from this episode?
Viewers can expect a fantastic eKasi story that has twists and turns.
