Fats’ cousin is in town, and he’s not happy about it. Samkelo Ndlovu debuts as Lerato on Rhythm City tonight.
23-year-old Samkelo Ndlovu from Alexandra makes her Rhythm City debut as Lerato tonight (24 July). The actress studied directing and writing at AFDA and started acting in 2010. Playing Lerato is her ninth TV role.
Tonight you will debut on Rhythm City as Lerato, how are you feeling?
One word can sum up the feeling - great. I have been shooting for the past four months. This is my ninth role on SA TV. There are a lot of youngsters on the Rhythm City set which made the experience even greater. So it’s been smooth-sailing, especially being surrounded by people who love their work just like me.
Did you always want to be an actress?
At the middle of my high school life I knew that I was a storyteller and that this was what I wanted to pursue. I wanted to come to the industry unrefined and unpolished hence I studied writing and directing and not acting. This enabled me to have a clear view of what the writer and director want and empowered me on the technical side of acting.
Tell us more about your character Lerato.
Lerato is a young woman trying to get a new start in a place where no one knows her. She’s the kind of woman who isn’t above using people to get what she wants, she’s calculating and manipulative. She’s also Fats’ cousin.
What character would you like to tackle in the near future?
I would love the challenge of playing a quiet person who is very contained. I feel that my vivacious outspoken personality is what casting directors pick up on. This would force me to step out of my comfort zone.
You will also be appearing on Mzansi Love, give us a sneak peak?
I will be playing Lebo Sekgwale a lawyer and a career driven woman who has given up on love.
If you aren’t acting you are …
If I’m not acting I’m singing. I’m currently cooking something in the studio. I write, sing it and believe in it. In my music I touch on politics, love and social issues. This will be my debut album and I’m planning on releasing it later in the year.
Quick Facts:
- I’m a size 32DD.
- I love tea and won’t start a day without a cup. I usually have a minimum four cups a day.
- I’ve been growing my dreadlocks for seven years.
- I’m obsessive about matching my underwear.
- I’m an awesome swimmer and if I didn’t break my ankle in Grade 11, I would have made provincial colours.
