The flamboyant Somizi Mhlongo talks about being the dance director on Step Up or Step Out.
Self-proclaimed “King of Bling,” Somizi’s first taste of fame came at age 13 when he was cast in the stage production of Sarafina! “This was the first time I was acting, dancing, and singing on stage. I immediately knew that this was what I wanted to do.”
As a choreographer, stage director, and producer, the multi-talented Somizi has worked on numerous TV shows and stage productions including Miss SA Teen, SA Music Awards, Metro FM Awards and Joyous Celebration. He says the highlight of his entertainment career has been choreographing the FIFA 2010 World Cup opening and closing ceremonies and the African Union 50th Anniversary in Ethiopia.
Somizi’s worked with many high-profile talents like R. Kelly, Shakira, Lady Smith Black Mambazo and Hugh Masakela, and has over three decades of experience in the entertainment industry. “Since I started working in the dance scene, the industry has made a complete 360. Before, dance was seen only as a hobby, now one can actually make it a career.”
That wealth of experience is being put to the test as Somizi mentors the Step Up or Step Outtop 10 crews. “I love being surrounded by the talent and different dance styles. I’ve really been inspired by the local talent this season. Don’t tell anyone of them I said that! This is the reason I wake up every day.”
Aside from being part of Step Up or Step Out this year, Somizi is also working on his own reality show, a dance exercise DVD, and is choreographing the Channel O Music Awards. “I’m extremely disciplined; a good listener and I don’t indulge in alcohol or other harmful substances.”
