Here are 10 interesting facts about the soapie:
1.The first episode premiered in 1965 which makes it the longest running soap opera on NBC.
2.At first, the episodes were only 30 minutes long. Ten years later in 1975 the episodes were extended to an hour.
3.The line at the beginning of every episode: "Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives." was voiced by Ed Prentiss from 1965 to March 1966. Afterwards, Macdonald Carey who played Dr. Tom Horton took over.
4.Joseph Mascolo (87) who played villain Stefano DiMera died on 8 December 2016 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. His character Stefano, who was dubbed “The Phoenix” for his ability to come back from the dead, was also killed off for good on the soapie earlier that year.
5.Deidre Hall (Marlena Evans) and her sister Andrea Hall were the first twins to appear in a soapie. Andrea played the role of Samantha Evans, Marlena’s jealous twin who stole her identity.
6.Drake Hogestyn (popularly known for his portrayal of John Black) has played seven different characters on the soapie since 1985. Some of the other characters he played are The Pawn, Roman Brady, John Stevens, Forrest Alamain, Father John, Ryan Brady DiMera and John Black.
7.Christine Clark who played Carrie Brady was fired from the soapie when she was 17 years old. She was eventually rehired due to intense chemistry between her and Patrick Muldoon who played her onscreen lover Austin Reed.
8.Before Alison Sweeney was cast as Sami Brady, she briefly appeared in a flashback episode on the soapie as a young Adrienne Johnson.
9.Cast members Bill Hayes and Susan Seaforth Hayes who played onscreen lovers Doug Williams and Julie Williams secretly married in 1974, two years before their characters got married on the show.
10.Hollywood actress Julia Roberts is said to be a huge fan of the soapie. At the 28th Annual People's Choice Awards in 2002, Days was named Favourite Daytime Dramatic Television Series and during the acceptance speech Deidre Hall thanked Roberts for voting 6 times. Roberts was also named Favourite Motion Picture Actress at the same event and during her acceptance speech she proclaimed her excitement for being seated in front of the Days cast, which she requested.
