In 2006, millions of rands were stolen during a heist at O.R. Tambo International Airport. Case Closed, Tuesdays at 9:30PM.
A gang of 24 men armed with AK-47s stole R100 million in cash from a South African Airways (SAA) plane. They held up police officers and guards after the flight landed and helped themselves to bags of currency flown in from Britain. It was later discovered that airport staff helped to plan the heist.
After a six-year trial, seven suspects were tried and sentenced for their involvement in the heist. Although the money was recovered and kept at a police station for safekeeping, R40 million was stolen from the safe.
