Palesa has stuck her nose in Cameron’s business and now she may have put Bronnie’s life in danger. We chat to Refilwe Madumo about her character.
Palesa has been trying to get to the bottom of the problem in the Jansen household for a while now. As a counselor, she’s very concerned about the well-being of Bronnie. Palesa became a counselor a few years ago when she realized she had reached a dead-end in her career. After giving birth to her first born Lefa, she didn’t want to be a receptionist anymore. She wanted to do something that added value to her life; she wanted to change the world. She found a course on counseling and has been counseling on the side ever since.
But is her meddling in the Jansen issue adding value or more harm? After weeks of probing and trying to get information from Bronnie about her real dad, Palesa met with Ivan behind Cameron’s back. That’s how she found out that Cameron isn’t Bronnie’s real father. She then teamed up with Mmadika to search for Bronnie’s real father. When she found out Marcel was the real father and she called him to say she knows where his daughter is.
Has Palesa gone too far?
We chat to Refilwe Madumo about Palesa’s nosiness.
Why the sudden interest in Bronnie’s well-being?
I think Cameron and Bronnie have always intrigued her. How they survive on so little and being secluded. They don’t have any other family according to Cameron. Not in Newtown, not in Joburg, not anywhere. They are alone in the world and that’s sad. In her interactions with Bronnie in the time that they’ve been living with them, she realized her stories don’t add up. They don’t add up with what Cameron has said. It just sent alarm bells with Palesa.
Why is it important for Palesa to get to the bottom of the story with Cameron?
She’s a student of psychology and now she thinks she can diagnose everything. With her little knowledge, she knew something was wrong and she diagnosed Cameron. She thought Cameron must have a split personality. If you’re convinced of something then everything is a sign. When Cameron gets angry it confirms her suspicions. She went on a crusade to prove that Cameron has a split personality and that he’s dangerous to Bronnie. Her main concern is saving this girl’s life.
Does this have to do with her own violent father?
Subconsciously we all have baggage. We don’t know how we react to things. She’s not consciously thinking of her father, it’s a subconscious thing – she’s wary of any man. It’s just something that’s ingrained in her. Her mother got impregnated by a pimp. She’s wary of men that are nice and especially Cameron who wants to take care of a child. She always wants to dig deep to see if it’s a sincere relationship.
Why does she think Cameron’s behaviour is suspicious?
She finds it suspicious because Bronnie says she’s got two dads. How can one have two fathers - one who is nice and one who is a dragon? That needs to be scrutinized. The more she speaks to Cameron the more his story falls apart. He said he doesn’t have a father but now he has one.
What information did she hope to get from her meeting with Ivan?
All she wanted to hear was that she’s right and that Cameron is sick and that he has a mental illness. But when she met the dad she realized that there’s more to the story. She’s even more in the dark after meeting Ivan.
What has she done with the information she got?
She took it Mmadika to investigate. She found out Cameron has a sister and somehow she’s connected to the story. Not only has Cameron lied about not having a dad but now there’s a sister also, so she gets Mmadika to investigate to find out more.
Will she ever let this go?
No, that’s just her nature. She will dig until she finds something.
