The plot thickens as we learn that Scandal’sCain and Layla are old lovers. What does this mean?
When Cain returned to South Africa he had one thing in mind: to find the cousin who stole his identity and make him pay.
Effecting revenge on Daniel is the one thing that kept him alive all these years. And once he set foot in Newtown he began devising his plan. The way he carried out his plan is important. A few weeks ago Cain successfully captured Daniel and is keeping him locked up in a dungeon. Every day he reminds Daniel of what he had to go through in a South American prison. Daniel is withering away and Cain is counting the days until his cousin keels over.
Everything is going according to plan, right?
Well, things just got slightly complicated when Cain ran into his old girlfriend, Layla – the only person on the outside who knows that he is the real Daniel.
Cain and Layla re-united
Last week Layla enlisted Sasha’s help to find someone she knew a long time ago…Daniel. But the investigation reached a dead end. But then just a day later she runs into the same person she was searching for. What a coincidence!
When she sees Cain she demands answers. Why did he walk out on her?
Though hesitant at first, Cain begins to tell her the truth. We learn that the two were romantically involved during apartheid. Layla was a young student and Cain was her lecturer. Like Romeo and Juliet, their love was forbidden and there were consequences for dating a young, white student at the time.
When Layla’s parents found out, they confronted Cain and threatened to destroy his career if he didn’t leave their daughter alone. They offered him money, but he refused it.
So he skipped the country to start a new life with his cousin in South America. He left no explanation, because he was instructed not to tell Layla the reason for his departure. He just disappeared. So all these years Layla thought Cain had walked out on her.
It’s been 25 years since they last saw each other and they are very different people now. Cain is no longer the sweet, considerate, kind man that Lalya once knew. He’s become dark and bitter, and worst of all he’s using an alias and planning to punish Daniel.
Sensing that he might destroy himself in the process, Layla immediately warns him about the dangers of revenge. Layla tells him that he might as well dig two graves, one for Daniel and one for himself. He replies by saying maybe he should.
He doesn’t tell Layla that he’s already kidnapped Daniel and that his plan is already in motion.
But Layla has a strange feeling that he may already have done something stupid. He’s a loose cannon who’s got nothing to live for. She decides to give him a new lease on life by telling him he has a son.
Will the fact that Cain has a son change things?
