Season 5 of eKasi: Our Stories kicks off tonight, Monday 15 July, with The Break In. We chat to the executive producer of the first episode, Bheki Sibiya.
The new season kicks off with yet another gritty episode, The Break In. The film was produced by Sobabili Productions, a Johannesburg-based production house specialising in film, documentaries and photography.
The Break In follows the story of two orphan brothers who resort to petty crime to survive.
Sello and Tshepo break into a rich man’s home when he leaves for work, but when they get to the bedroom they discover a teenage girl tied up and gagged. The boys remove the duct tape from the girl’s mouth, but before they can do anything else, the evil man returns.
We chat to The Break In executive producer, Bheki Sibiya.
What inspired the story?
The Break In reflects on the thin line between the poor and the rich in South Africa.
There’s a strong emphasis on human trafficking in the story. Is human trafficking prevalent in South Africa?
Human trafficking is a problem in South Africa. We’ve seen young people being misled through social media. Every day we see posters of missing children. There are also pedophiles who prey on young kids hence these kids are misled into believing they will have a better life abroad.
What can viewers expect from The Break In?
The viewers can expect an exciting drama experienced through the experiences of two poverty-stricken boys who love each. They are outcasts because of their situation, and no one loves them, all they have is each other. They resort to stealing not to be rich but because they are hungry. This drama has a happy ending.
