A look at the weekend’s best Kasi Tour moments!

The e.tv Kasi Tour hit Piertmaritzburg on Friday, 28 February and kicked off with a visit to Jenny’s Animal Farm where our celebs spent the afternoon underprivileged children from various children’s homes in Pietermaritzburg.

We got the weekend warmed up with a Club Takeoer party at Varitas Night Club in Scottsville, where DJ Bloc, DJ Zan-D and Mo Flava got the crowds pumped up and partygoers painted the town red with the e.tv stars.

Our last stop on the weekend-long tour was on Saturday, 1 March, when the gang headed out to Greater Edendale Mall. Sandile Lephonda kept the crowds entertained with competitions and loads of prize giveaways. Fans had the opportunity to get an autograph and pose for a picture with their favourite stars!

But don’t take our word, here’s what the actors, DJs, and presenters had to say.

Oscar Pistorius Trial: eNCA Apologises for Michelle Burger Photo

eNCA has issued a statement apologising for showing a still photograph of state witness Michelle Burger, during the live broadcast of the trial this morning.

This morning during court testimony by state witness Michelle Burger, eNCA showed a still photo of Ms Burger which was sourced from the University of Pretoria’s website.

The trial was interrupted momentarily when it was pointed out that a photograph of the witness was shown on live TV against the wishes of the witness and against court order.

“No disrespect was intended. We did not understand the court order issued by Judge Mlambo to prevent this – we understood it only to apply to pictures taken of witnesses during the court proceedings” says Patrick Conroy, Group Head of News. “But, on reflection, this was a bad judgment call on our part and we accept that it did not accord with the spirit of the court order.”

eNCA will cooperate fully with any inquiry in this regard and deeply regrets the upset caused.

“Justice Masipa has now issued a further order that no photos be published of any witnesses who do not want to appear on camera, regardless of the source of those photos.  We are grateful for the clarity provided by this further order and we will obviously adhere to it fully” says Patrick Conroy.

eNCA has been at the forefront of working with the Judiciary for improved access to the courts. We would never consciously undermine our own efforts over the past ten years. We should have been more cautious and sought clarity first. This has been an important lesson for everyone in terms of communication with the courts and the parties concerned.

Trial TV: The State vs Oscar Pistorius will run on OpenView HD Channel 119. Watch the 1PM, 7PM and 10PM eNews bulletins for updates.

The 5 Most Sensational Trials of Our Time

$
0
0

The world is enthralled by the trial of Oscar Pistorius, the Olympic athlete who is accused of the murder of his model girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, on Valentine’s Day last year.

Paralympian athlete, beautiful model girlfriend, a brutal killing on Valentine’s Day. This is the stuff Hollywood dramas are made of. It’s the type of trial opportunistic media houses dream of and it affords quick-witted social media celebrity Twits the opportunity to gain even more followers.

Even if you’re not one of the millions following the trial with morbid curiosity, let’s face it, the #OscarTrial is the trendiest thing in SA right now. But it’s not the first trial or crime to cause such sensation. Us humans love a good romantic thriller, don’t we?

While Pistorius fights to prove his innocence in the North Gauteng High Court, we take a look at some of the most sensational trials over the years.

1. O.J Simpson
He was accused of the murders of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ronald Goldman on 12 June 1994.

He was acquitted after an eight month long trial in Los Angeles that ranked as one of the world's most-watched criminal proceedings.

In October 2008, O.J. was convicted on 12 counts of armed robbery and kidnapping, along with Clarence Stewart. The two men were found guilty of robbing two sports memorabilia dealers at gunpoint in a Las Vegas hotel room in 2007. O.J and Stewart were sentenced in December 2008 to up to 33 years in prison, with the possibility of parole after nine years.

Some publications have dubbed Oscar’s case “South Africa’s O.J’s case” – with both of them high-profile athletes accused of murdering the woman they had relationships with.

2. Dina Rodrigues
She’s serving a life sentence after being convicted of hiring four men and paying them R10 000 to murder six-month-old Jordan Leigh Norton on 15 June 2005.

Jordan Leigh was the daughter of Neil Wilson, with whom Rodrigues had a relationship. The baby was stabbed to death with a knife.

Her co-accused Sipho Mfazwe and Mongezi Bobotyane were also found guilty in 2007 and sentenced to life in prison. Zanethemba Gwada and Bonginkosi Sigenu were given 15-year jail sentences.

3. Taliep Petersen
The late music legend’s wife Najwa Petersen is serving a 28 year sentence for his execution-style slaying. Taliep was shot in his Athlone home in Cape Town on 16 December 2006.

Her co-accused, Abdoer Emjedi and Waheed Hassen were sentenced to 24 years and 25 years respectively. The fourth accused, Jefferson Snyders, was found not guilty of murder, but guilty on a charge of robbery with aggravating circumstances. He was sentenced to 10 years, three of which were suspended.

4. Modern ‘Bonnie & Clyde’
Craig Michael Pritchert and Nova Ester Guthrie, an American couple, were dubbed the modern-day Bonnie and Clyde for a spate of bank robberies across the US West.

The duo were arrested in Cape Town in 2003 after eight years on the run. Guthrie worked as a manager at a Cape Town nightclub while Pritchert visited her regularly.

They robbed banks between 1993 and 1996 and would head off to vacation spots after their armed robberies.

5. Shrien Dewani
He’s suspected of ordering the killing of his new wife Anni who was shot as the couple travelled in a taxi on the outskirts of Cape Town in November 2010.

Dewani claimed the couple were kidnapped at gunpoint and that he was released unharmed. They were on their honeymoon at the time. Anni’s body was found in the abandoned car the next day. She had been shot dead.

Zola Tongo, taxi driver, was jailed for 18 years after he admitted his part in the killing. Another accomplice, Mziwamadoda Qwabe, pleaded guilty to murder and received a 25-year prison sentence.

Dewani, who denied any part in the murder, is currently fighting removal to South Africa to face trial over his wife Anni's death until he has recovered from mental health problems.

Follow the full trial on Trial TV: The State vs Oscar Pistorius on OpenView HD Channel 119. Watch the 1PM, 7PM and 10PM eNews bulletins for updates.

3 Signs Gogo Nyathi Might be Dying

$

0

She arrived unexpectedly bearing bad news again. Whether you believe it or not, Gogo Nyathi thinks she’s dying. We show you three possible signs that she might be right.

As a sangoma, Gogo Nyathi’s responsibility is to create harmony between the living and the dead, to make sure that the living lead a trouble-free life. She knows ancestors have to be shown respect through rituals, animal sacrifice, and burning sacred plants like imphepho. But last year she broke this harmony by engaging in witchcraft. What price will she pay for disturbing the peace between the Nyathis and their ancestors?

She believes that the only punishment fit for her crimes is death. Is she right? We show three possible signs that she might be dying.

1. Going blind

A few days after interfering with Cain’s plan by casting a spell on him, Gogo Nyathi went blind. It had been a hectic few days; Cain had been shot dead and Daniel was lying in hospital after taking a bullet for Maletsatsi. After visiting Daniel, Shakira came back home pleased with his recovery. And she had heard from the doctors that Cain’s appendix had ruptured and that’s what made him drop the gun. He would have died within a few days if Mangi didn’t shoot him.

She wondered if the spell caused that to Cain. But most importantly she was happy with the outcome of the battle and she told Gogo they didn’t pay the price Gogo had feared they would. But then Gogo told her that she’d already paid the price. She has gone blind! Gogo Nyathi has been blind ever since.

2. Burns on her skin

Gogo thinks Cain’s spirit is still wandering and that it will come back to haunt them. She visited a highly respected sangoma, Bra Phiri, who told her fetching Cain’s spirit and the cleansing ritual the Nyathis performed last year didn’t work. The ancestors are still very angry and the Nyathis will pay. She’ll be the first to be punished. She knows her days are numbered and she came home to die.

When she arrived at the Nyathi household she pulled up her sleeve and revealed nasty burns all over her body which she proclaimed represents the fire of the ancestors. Daniel promptly took her to Dr Letaba who said she had no explanation for the blisters but she doesn’t think they are life threatening. But can her opinion be taken seriously especially after she misdiagnosed Daniel with cancer just last week?

3. Begging for Quinton’s forgiveness

You know what they say; only people who are dying confess their sins and beg for forgiveness so that they can make things right with their ancestors. So we don’t take lightly the fact that Gogo Nyathi desperately wants Quinton’s forgiveness before she dies. She summoned him to the Nyathi home where she told him it’s her time to die. She cheated death for too long and her punishment is catching up with her.  She apologized for her hand in Cain’s death and admitted she abused her powers.

Do you think Gogo is dying?

Bayern Munich booked their place in the Champions League's quarter-finals, despite Arsenal earning a 1-1 draw in Bavaria in Tuesday's last 16, second-leg clash.

Bastian Schweinsteiger's goal in the second-half gave Bayern a brief lead before Arsenal's Lukas Podolski equalised the score.

Arsenal failed to overturn their 2-0 deficit from the first leg three weeks ago. Last season they went out at the same stage of the competition to the same opponents.

The quarter-final draw will take place on 21 March.

We relive some action-packed moments from last night's clash.
