Goodbye, Mia

A startling climax to episode five sees the end of Mia and drives Traffic into even darker terrain. We chat to actress Trudy Van Rooy about her character.

Playing Mia marks 26-year-old Trudy’s TV debut. And what a debut it is. Few can boast having a major role in a critically good TV series alongside industry stars like Bonnie Mbluli.

The University of Cape Town graduate tells us more about what her days on set was like and what she’ll be up to next.

Did you have to do any preparation for this character?
For me it was about identifying what about Mia is similar to me. I did see a lot of myself in the character. So ja, it was about finding those similarities.

Mia lies to her parents, is she a problem child?
No, I don’t think she’s a problem child at all. She’s just curious and unfortunately she doesn’t come from the kind of home where that curiosity is allowed to be explored. Her father is very strict and controlling. And when you’re in this type of environment where you’re not allowed to do what you would like - you find your own way of doing it.

What is Mia’s relationship like with Jacques?
She wants to be close to Jacques because he’s Dini’s best friend. And Jacques is also just that chilled out kind of guy. She wants to uplift people, she works at the church. In Jacques she sees somebody who is troubled and she wants to help him and guide him as best she can.

What’s her relationship like with Dini?
With Dini its attraction. He’s a little bit older than her and he’s got that kind of masculinity and strength and that kind of swag about him. He’s different and that’s what’s appealing – he’s completely outside of the world that she knows.

What was the best part about being on the set of Traffic?
It’s my fourth year of being a professional actor and Traffic is my television debut. So I learned a lot on set, about how television set works. The crew is so funny, I loved the joking and banter in-between takes with the DOP (director of photography) and the lighting guys and the props guys.

Were there any fun, funny, or odd moments from set that stands out for you?
Well I had to do a few pole dancing lessons for Mia’s character along with my co-star Lauren Joseph.  And the first day we shot our pole dancing scene, one of the actors (can’t remember his name now) just jumped on the pole and did a whole bunch of crazy moves that took us a month of training for. I was jealous!

So we see your character die in tonight’s episode, it’s a bit of a shock. Did you know from the beginning Mia is going to die?
After I got the role and the script I saw that Mia is killed.

Do you know who the killer is?
I know who the killer is, but I think everybody will be very surprised to find out who the killer is at the end of the day.

What’s next for you?
I just got a part in the new Oliver Hermanus movie Endless River and we’ll start shooting in April. I’m very excited about that!

Watch Traffic! every Wednesday at 9:35PM.

Hamba Kahle, Gogo Nyathi

She had to be punished for her sins, but was death too harsh? We speak to Scandal’s assistant series producer Grace Mahlaba about Gogo Nyathi’s death.

Cain’s ghost flashed before her moments before she died. She went into distress and never recovered. Gogo Nyathi has died. She had a premonition about her own death, but no one believed her. And now she’s gone. But was the punishment too harsh?

Scandal’s assistant series producer Grace Mahlaba talks to us about Gogo’s death

How did Gogo anger the ancestors– what Sangoma principles did she go against when she dabbled in dark magic?

We don’t know if Gogo angered the ancestors, it depends on what you believe in. But we do know for sure that she did something bad to her whole family. It is Gogo herself who explains all her illnesses and all the bad things that the family is experiencing as the anger of the ancestors, because she is familiar with the world of ancestors and she knows fully that colluding with her son to keep the secret was wrong.

Gogo’s calling to be a Sangoma has a huge responsibility. She was called to heal, help, counsel and sometimes bring people who are in dispute together, but she did the opposite and out of desperation even went to an extend of dabbling in witchcraft to help her son, which goes against everything healers believe in.

But she repented and even performed a ritual after Cain’s death, why hasn’t this worked?

When she performed the ritual it was still out of desperation. She was trying to fix the whole mess, but it was a waste of time because she still used the wrong name, Cain Gumede.

Why is Gogo receiving the harshest punishment?

Is death the harshest punishment? Gogo was old, death was inevitable. Gogo is relieved she’s resting, shouldn’t we be worried about the living?

Will Gogo Nyathi’s death redeem the Nyathis?

Only time will tell. Keep watching.

Hamba Kahle, Gogo Nyathi.

Daniel got umthakathi to perform dark magic rituals in the house, but before he could relax his mother visited him from the grave. We show you pictures of last night’s episode.

Seeing Cain in his dreams freaked Daniel out so much he enlisted the help of umthakathi to perform a ritual that will protect his family. He tried to get rid of Shakira so that he's alone in the house when the ritual is performed but she came back in time to see umthakathi in action. The umthakathi performed a ritual disposing of the ancestors so that they don’t haunt the house. After the ritual in the house umthakathi gave Daniel a pouch for protection and Daniel felt more in control.

But then he had a nightmare vision of Gogo...She looked at him with great sadness and disappointment and asked; “Likasi, what have you done?”

Did Daniel make matters worse by performing the ritual?

A remix of the hit song “Gangnam Style” called “Nkandla Style” is making waves on the internet.

With the recent storm brewing over upgrades at President Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla homestead someone made a remix of “Gangnam Style” and called it “Nkandla Style.”

The video makes reference to some of the findings by the Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s Nkandla report.

This is why we love South Africa’s sense of humour!

Kimberley Kasi Tour Recap

Karaoke, swinging from balconies, and crazy crowds gone wild - the e.tv and OpenView HD stars invaded Kimberley for a weekend-long party.

The e.tv and OpenView HD stars touched down in the Diamond City early Friday (28, March) afternoon, but there was no time to relax. First stop was the hotel where everyone had only a few minutes to freshen up before making their way to radio interviews around the city.

Then it was off to the Flamingo Casino’s Entertainment Grounds where we spent the afternoon with a children’s home in the area. The kids got to meet their favourite e.tv and OpenView HD stars and were entertained with soccer, karaoke, jumping castles, a mechanical bull and slides.

Khanyi Mbau and Ntombi Mzolo hogged the karaoke station and had everyone singing along to their rendition of TLC’s “Scrubs.” A few of the kids went up next and opted for Beyonce’s “Single Ladies.” Khanyi got everyone laughing when she playfully heckled them saying, “Remember when you hit those high notes don’t fart!”

It was over all too soon, and after handing out e.tv and Openview HD goodie bags, everyone was back on the bus for the 20-minute drive back to the hotel.

After a quick splash and an outfit change, it was off to the media dinner where journalists had the opportunity to meet the actors and presenters face-to-face. The guys were disappointed when the scheduled trip to The Big Hole was cancelled because the women’s heels were too much of a safety hazard. Eish!

Next stop was the Rio Cocktail Lounge for the Club 808 Club Takeover. And spirits were high as everyone was excited to see what Kimberley nightlife had to offer. We were greeted by screaming fans trying to catch a glimpse of the TV personalities as they existed the bus, greeted the crew.

Once settled in the VIP area on the top level and in full view of the partygoers, Mo Flava got the night started with some fresh house beats.

Of course Khanyi was a crowd pleaser, she was dancing on tables and swinging from the balcony! But she really got the crowd excited when, later in the night, she made her way down to the general area and danced and socialised with everyone there.

DJ Zan-D wrapped up the party with his signature hip hop beats. Everyone lost their minds the moment Beyonce’s “Drunk In Love” started.  The e.tv crew were still singing lines from the track when we made our way back to the bus in the early hours of Saturday morning, “watermelon!”

Despite the late night, there was no time to sleep in; we were off bright and early to Thabane High School where we met more screaming fans.

The scorching heat didn’t stop anyone from waiting for hours to meet his or her favourite celebs. And they were not disappointed because the e.tv personalities were warm and obliging, thanking their supporters, posing for pictures, handing out autographs, jiving on stage and dishing out tons hugs.

Midway through the event MC Big Dreamz threatened to cut the event short when the crowd started pushing forward and the barricades collapsed! Luckily, the situation was quickly brought under control and the roadshow continued as planned.

It all ended just after 1PM, and then it was straight to the airport for the flight back home.

Stay fixed on e.tv and follow us on Facebook and Twitter to find out when we will be in your your city!
